Evening Prayer/ Compline

A combination of components usually included in evening prayer (vespers) and nighttime prayer (compline), this can be prayed at any time in the evening or as you prepare for bed.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening prayer

Lord, quiet our hearts and minds as we come to the end of this day. We give thanks for the blessings we received and those we were able to share. Release us now from the tasks and duties that never end, and welcome us into your stillness. Bring us peace as we prepare to rest, knowing that we rest in your arms. Amen.

Confession and assurance of forgiveness

Holy God, I have sinned, both in ways I know and ways I do not know. I have failed to trust in you and have placed my trust in earthly things. I have failed to love my neighbors as myself, failed to welcome and serve strangers, and failed to love you, God.

Forgive me, renew me, and remind me of the promise of my baptism, when I was marked as your child and made new in your name.

If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just
will forgive us our sins
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Surely we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55)
My soul magnifies the Lord,
   and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
   for you have looked with favor
   on the lowliness of your servants.
Surely, from now on all generations
   will call me blessed;
   You, the Mighty One
   have done great things for me,
   and holy is your name.
Your mercy is for those who fear you
   from generation to generation.
You have shown strength with your arm;
   you have scattered the proud
   in the thoughts of their hearts.
   You have brought down the powerful
   from their thrones,
   and lifted up the lowly.
You have filled the hungry with good things,
   and sent the rich away empty.
You have helped your servant Israel,
   in remembrance of your mercy,
   according to the promise
   you made to our ancestors,
   to Abraham and to his descendants
   forever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
   and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever
   shall be, world without end. Amen.

Song of Simeon (Luke 2:29-32)
Save us Lord while we are awake,
   protect us while we sleep;
   that we may keep watch with Christ
   and rest with him in peace.
Lord, now you are dismissing
your servant in peace,
according to your word;
for my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared
in the presence of all peoples,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and for glory to your people Israel.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
   and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever
   shall be, world without end. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven,
   hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
   on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
   and forgive us our trespasses,
   as we forgive those who trespass against us,
   and lead us not into temptation,
   but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
   and the power, and the glory,
   for ever and ever. Amen.

Closing prayer

May the Lord Almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.
